Take the Time You Need

Some Things You Can Do Before

You Meet With an Attorney

-   Cover immediate expenses like funeral costs.

- Contact Social Security office and any pension companies to notify of passing.

- Cancel credit cards and unnecessary subscriptions in decedent’s name alone.

- Obtain several originals of the death certificate. (We recommend starting with 10.)

- Locate any original documents, including Last Will or Trusts.

- Secure your loved one's personal property to prevent loss or theft.

Take Care of You

Accept Help

Allow your friends to cook you a meal. If they offer to help you run errands, let them.

Look After Your Health

Remind yourself to eat. Drink plenty of water, walk or exercise regularly and try as best as you can to sleep.

Be Balanced

Acute grief periods are normal. Just try to balance them with other activities, like going for a walk or spending time with friends.

Help Others

We usually feel better when we are focused on others, so try volunteering, reaching out to a lonely friend or helping a neighbor.

Remember Your Loved One

Talk about your loved one often. Encourage friends to share their good memories.
